Hi Fiona. How long is the "hanging" lasting before you apparently terminate the process? It is not uncommon for there to be seemingly no activity happening whereas it actually is. I regularly find that my backup is apparently hanging at 0% but if I wait long enough (can be many minutes), it eventually shows that some action is occurring and ultimately the whole process completes.

Hi Fiona. Have you ever tried backing up to your local drive and then copying that file to your external drive? I know that this would potentially take longer to do, but this alternative may bring something to light about the ability to backup to the external drive. Plus, if that works, you will be saved a lot of time and frustration against something which appears to be failing and not completing what it should be doing.
Also, have you ever looked at the destination drive to see if the file has actually backup up?
