Inventory Sub Items

I hope this doesn't sound confusing, however, hoping someone can tell me if this is possible.

Description below is for example purpose only.


Item made is a car which is made up of many inventory parts.

When ordering many inventory parts, it is easy to incorrectly order the correct quantity of an inventory part required to make up the inventory assembly.

At the moment, all parts are entered as inventory parts. Then an inventory assembly consists of all of the inventory parts to make up the inventory assembly (car).

As an example, rather than order 4x rims, 4x tyres, 4x hub caps, 20x wheel nuts, Can an assembly be made, let us call it a wheel, then this assembly, be added to the assembly of ‘the car’.

My supplier will still want to see individual items on the purchase order, not a wheel.

We would also need the ability to order inventory parts separately also.

    Hi Julie,

    I don't think there is a good way to do what you want out of the box.

    But you can use a custom solution that requires some programming. Basically, you can create the PO with the assembly items in it. Then you can run the custom add-on that can read the PO and update the item details, the output would be the PO will all the inventory parts. I have done several similar apps ( for eg. batch update custom fields of open Sales Orders when the item's custom field changed).

    @Julie C Yes, you can add Assembly Items to other Assemblies eg Add your "Wheel" Assembly Item to your exiting "Car" Assembly.

    When you purchase the components from a Supplier, you should be selecting the individual Inventory Part items on the PO, not the Assemblies.
