Welcome to the Reckon Community Sylvia.

Its best to work with files on the hard drive rather than on external devices, so always backup to your local drive and copy/paste the backup to your USB.  And vice versa.

For your current issue remove the read-only tags on the backup file:
  1. In Windows Explorer browse to folder containing your backup;
  2. Right-click your data file (it has an extension QDF) and select Properties;
  3. In the Attributes area, clear the checkbox next to Read-Only;
  4. Repeat for each file associated with your file (extensions HCX, IDX, QEL, QPH, QSL);
  5. Open Quicken and restore you backup.

Trust this gets you into yuor file.

John

Thanks John,  My checkbox next to Read-only is clear.    I have screenshot the Properties box below.
There are a couple of boxes ticked in the advanced settings...

Thanks Sylvia,

Copy this directory to another directory to act as your backup.  Then using Windows functions, remove the date tags on your file names so they all show just QDATA1.QDF etc. (or something more meaningful and no more than 8 characters).

Now try opening your file again.

Thanks John,  as I received your email, I got the Data Files onto the new laptop, by backing up again as I still have it on the old laptop then emailing to myself and opening the file it inserted itself.  Great.  But then I have a lot of my Data missing from my investment side.   So I have been trying to insert HCX,  IDX, QEL, QPH files to see if that is what I am missing...    not having any luck inserting those files.   sorry to be a pain.         Cheers Sylvia

Hi Sylvia,

I would rename your file on the old laptop to 8 characters using the File > File Operations > Rename option.  Then create a new backup.  Suggest you create a new folder on the old laptop and backup to that folder. Copy the whole folder to your USB and transfer to new laptop.  Copy the backup folder to your Documents folder and restore the backup from that location.

Also, your old quicken product may encounter some problems because of the newer operating system.  See our note on Quicken launcher errors at start-up and what to do about them.

regards,
John

Thank you John for all your help,   I think I have to bite the bullet and update to the new version as it does seem whatever I try it does not fix the problem. Maybe because of the newer operating system and the old quicken as you mentioned. 2 days of pulling my hair out is enough!!!!
There is a 2017 or as the lady mentioned to me a 2018 is coming out at the end of the month.   Reckon Personal plus. Not sure which one at this stage.   I hope that the problem is solved with one of these options..
Thank you again for your help.
Cheers Sylvia.

Hi Sylvia,

The problem is datafile related and not application related so upgrading to the latest version is unlikely to solve it.  Also, as a general rule, it is better to address problems in your current version before upgrading.

Please try again - rename the file on the old computer to 8 characters, create a backup, transfer to new PC, restore - as outlined above.

On your new PC launch Quicken in "Run As Admin" mode - right-click your launch icon > Properties > Compatibility and tick the box Run this program in compatibility mode for and select Windows XPsp2.  Then on the same screen in the Settings section, tick the box Run this program as an administrator.  Apply and OK to complete.

regards,
John.

Hi John, I had uninstalled the app from my new Laptop, and today reinstalled, And followed you instructions again , change to Run as Admin renamed and save again etc etc.. it has loaded but still missing a lot of my investments, So I thought I would go in and insert a price history and it sent all the other investments to 000. I had this messaged typed and ready to send and thought I would give it another go..

Great after a lot more persisting and retrying I have finally GOT It...
weather I have a little bug in there, As my old one goes back to blank mode
Occasionally and I need to restore it.. do you think I need to update or stick with what I know..
