‘Account Balance’ report’s values depend on date range

I am getting an error in the balance reported on an ‘Investment’ account in the ‘Account Balance’ report?

 I am running ReckonAccounts Personal Plus, 2013, Release R1 on Windows 8.1.  These errors have been present in this account for many years.  In an Account Balance report with monthly or weekly interval, the errors first show in October 2006.

 I’ve deduced the errors are computation errors in Quicken (I could be wrong).  The reasons I conclude the cause is computation errors rather than data entry errors are:

·       I’ve compared the balance in the Account Balances report against the Portfolio view and the Portfolio report (both of which are giving the correct balance at any date I check).  From this comparison I’ve determined the size of the error at end of month and end of week.  So I know when the errors change and the magnitude of the change for any selected date range.  I’ve compared many reports.

·       I’ve checked the transactions in the week when the amount of the error changes.  There are no apparent problems with the data.

·       I’ve Validated and Super-Validated the file .

·       The size of the error changes depending on the start date of the report. The later the start date the larger the error (in general but not always).

·       If reports are produced with the start date held constant at the inception date for the account (Sept 2004) and the end date is incremented yearly (each FY, at 30 June) from 2005 to 2014, the error at the end of each FY first appears in Oct 2006, increases in jumps for two years (to 2008) then is constant thereafter.

·       If the start date is incremented each FY and the end date held constant at 30 Jun 2014, the error at both the start date and end date fluctuates but there is a general increase in the size of the error.  For reports with start at 2008 or later, the error at the start date is the same as the error at the end date on each report.  But this is not the case for reports with end dates, 2005, 2006, 2007.

 ·       The amount of the error changes in jumps.   It remains constant for weeks or months, then abruptly changes.

·       The dates when the changes in the amount of error occurs changes when the start an end dates are changed.

·       The errors are up to about $1000 (highest is for FY2013-14).

    This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled ReckonAccounts error in Account Balance report, Investment account values depend on date range.

    Hi Peter,

    Welcome to the Reckon Community.

    Can you try to recalculate all the transactions in an investment register first?

    1. Copy (File>File Operation>Copy) your ReckonAccounts data file and then open the new copy you created.

    2. From ReckonAccounts Menu bar, Go to Edit>Preference>Program

    3. Choose Setup on the left, and then set Keyboard Mappings for Ctrl-Z/X/C/V to ReckonAccounts Standard.

    4. Click OK

    5. From the Account List, double-click the investment register to be recalculated.

    6. Click the Date field for a new (blank) transaction.

    7. Press Ctrl+Z

    8. Click OK when prompted to recalculate all transactions.
      Note: There is not a progress bar for the recalculation process. Look in the Date field to see if the recalculation process is still working. If the Date field is blinking, the register is still being recalculated.

    9. Click OK to any messages after noting which securities have been affected.

    10. Check to see if the original discrepancies with investment calculations or reports have been resolved.

    Can you also tick Show Hidden transactions by going to the following steps?

    1. From ReckonAccounts Menu bar, Go to Edit>Preference>Program

    2. Click on Investment Transactions on the left menu

    Hope this information helps and let me know how you go.

    Cheers,

    Jason

    Hi Jason,

    Thank you very much for your reply and for the clearly explained steps to follow.  I was very hopeful.  But I've tried and it hasn't fixed the problem.  The problem is that the Account Balance reports shows the wrong balance even though the Account register shows the correct balance.  Today, the Account Balances report, with 'Interval' set at 'None', is showing a total balance error of ~$1,600 (when compared with the Account Register, the Portfolio view and the Portfolio Value report.  As mentioned in the email I sent you, the amount of the error changes depending on the date range selected for the report.

    The amount of the errors (ignoring the digits above thousands) for different 'intervals' are:
    the correct figure from the Register = 0632.29
    None = 2019.09
    Quarterly = 0695.15
    Yearly = 0640.34

    I followed the steps as you explained.  When I clicked to 'Recalculate all transactions', the highlighted row moved to the first transaction in the account in about 1 second, and nothing more happened.  The cursor was blinking as normal in the date field but the date was not blinking and nothing was happening.  I've tried three times.  'Windows Task Manager' shows no CPU is being used by Quicken.  So, I presume nothing is happening.

    I am running on Windows 8.1 with a new fairly fast computer (16 MB memory).

    Hi Jason,

    Your first comment said; "Can you try to recalculate all the transactions in an investment register first?"

    I followed the process you suggested, and no change to the error I am getting in the Account Balance report (see my reply to your comment above).  is there a second step you can suggest?

    Hi Peter,

    Can you try to super-validate the new copied data file and see if helps? It sounds like an isolated case as i cannot reproduce the problems here. Can you contact technical support for further analysis of your data file?

    Thanks
    Jason

    I did a Validate and Super Validate and the error remains unchanged.  I've lodged a  Reckon data Service Request.

    did not work for me either. I have a similar problem, values on reports don't match value in investment register.

    Donald Murray, Reckon Data Recovery are working on my file to try to find what the cause is and how to fix it.  They've been at it for about  4 months, so I am hoping they can find the cause and an easy fix.

    It seems if you 'refresh' some transactions, this reduces the amount of the error, but I don't yet know how to identify which transactions to 'refresh'.
