I guess you never spent time on old system logging off because all printer definitions had disappeared, then logging onto Manage Account, deleting printer definition file, logging back on to Reckon Hosted to find it hadn't worked and repeating process all over again and at some time rebooting computer to make it all work again.

Or never had a print job only print first page, or corrupt the outside column so had to email as pdf to yourself to get full print job.

Hey Debra, thanks for your feedback. The changes to printing have been made to provide flexibility and further compatibility.

As one of the major points of feedback from our customers in the current versions of Reckon Accounts Hosted was printing, we’ve listened to our customers and found a way to resolve this. With having an almost infinite amount of printer drivers and configurations to support, providing a system that would be compatible with everyone would be impossible, therein lies the reason for PDF printing.

The PDF format allows our users to utilise the current printer driver setup that you know works on your environment, and does not require any sort of compatibility with Hosted or the infrastructure. The PDF format is extremely easy to email, print on any printer and you have the ability to save forms etc. easily on your local PC, even use a cloud printer like Google Drive.

With the contemporary trend of moving towards paperless offices, PDF benefits the ease of emailing forms instead of printing. It's essentially a plug-and-play feature! I thank you again for your feedback and can assure you we will always look to improve efficiency of the Print solution... yes even reducing the ‘number of clicks’ a user must perform! ^Mirko

How do I get this new printer system to print my custom invoice out with all the information on it and 1 piece of paper, I get the invoice and a blank sheet?

If your technical staff actually knew what they were doing when they set up citrix there is no need for Reckon to support any printer configurations as in the citrix server setup there is a check box for the administrator to click that specifically says "USE CLIENT COMPUTERS PRINTER CONFIGURATION" and another one that says "REFRESH CLIENT PRINTER CONFIGURATION EVERY CONNECTION" and if the end user was allowed on the server in windows to configure their Citrix Receiver application how Citrix designed it to be used, the application improved printer support rather than loading a new ICA file every time you logged into the website.

This new crap is costing me minimum of 3hrs a day, that is $298 that I am loosing every day.

Hi Mirko, Thanks for your answer but it explains nothing new, for me.
It is going to take much longer to do my tasks, so that can't be an improvement.  And as stated below I already had a free program "CuteWriter" for pdf function that allowed me email a pdf to my customers, but most still want a printed invoice on our company letterhead (which is now also a long-winded process to upload).  So I already have 2 physical printers and the cute writer set up and never a problem with printer compatibilities, hence stating a backward step for me.

This is a copy of the email I just sent to online support and explains my frustrations a bit more

I have just watched the video for the new pdf printer option for Accounts Hosted.  What a cumbersome, convoluted process just to print.  I am rather annoyed as you have just made my working time double in most tasks, including to print invoices, for example. I already had a pdf option in my local printers so this is a major step backwards for me and running our business.  Was there a consultation process with your customers regarding the changes?  Please bring back the option for local printers asap to suit all of your customers.

For someone that generates 150 or more invoices a day this is NOT an improvement the old system worked fine we should have the option to turn on or off PDF. And as for the clipboard a 4 key stroke has now become 6 key stroke and mouse this is also something I use alot of for the first time in 10 or 12 years i will have to change from Reckon because my work hours will become so huge that wages will double

Totally agree with above. The new PDF only sux big time. It is very cumbersome and takes way too long even with the 10 - 20 invoices we print per day. The old one wasn't great either, as it was too stupid to remember which printer was used last which in itself is rediculous that it couldn't be fixed, but this is not an improvement either. RECKON, wake up and employ some decent programmers, not programming students! You'll lose your users like this over very simple funtions that are a joke that they are not fixed...

Maybe Reckon can integrate their Hosted platform with the Google Cloud Print service.

This can likely satisfy the users who insist on printing directly to their own local printer instead of to PDF.

https://www.google.com/cloudprint/learn/

They even provide resources for developers to help them integrate with the service.

Thanks guys, I knew I couldn't be the only one who thinks this is a major step backwards and definitely not an improvement. If we voice our opinion as loud as those that had printer compatibility problems maybe we well get a say in future updates.  yes I know, wishful thinking...

The new PDF system was necessary. They just need to ditch the extra buttons in the middle - i.e. have the PDF pop up as soon as you click Print. I imagine in future releases it will happen.

  • 820 Points 500 badge 2x thumb
But I have to change reports in excel to fit on a single page etc for BAS reports . I also need to print our invoices on our pre-printed letter heads for mailing to customers.  So not sure how having a PDF pop up can help when there is no flexibility in columns, margins, fonts, with a PDF in this way, as far as I understand.

Hi Debra,

It was necessary due to a majority of users  having significant down time caused by local printer issues. The new printing functionality is more user friendly, I for one who previously experienced many issues & way too much down time with the previous function of printing am loving the new printing functionality. Thanks Reckon :-)

Video on printing, hope this helps

Unfortunately for Reckon they are never going to please everyone, though are doing there very best to make improvements that will benefit a majority of there users.

Hi Debra,

We would have loved to, but we couldn't combine both technologies, and I know it seems as though it was not 'broken' however we had far too many issues with local printers to continue with that process.

This is however the first stage of the printer development and we are looking at a) less steps - although some are defaulted by the browser and b) cloud printing options.

The first step was to make sure every user could print all of the time, and now we can work on streamlining the process.

In the meantime, are you able to tick the invoices you want to print in the 'to be printed' box as you create them, and then batch print them from File > Print Forms?

Hi Vivien,

Could you provide the (business) steps you take when printing invoices so we can include this in our development discussions, including the reasons (even the obvious ones) why batch printing (or mini-batch printing) is not an option.

The more detail the better.

As I said, this is step one and will underpin the future development, but there is room for improvement. Any feedback will help shape this.

We use Estimates, Sales Orders and Invoices for our manufacturing business. We utilise different versions of the customised document depending on the purpose. eg. A customer who has placed an order requires two different templates to be printed from the same Sales Order document (if that makes sense) 1 x reads Order (for the Customer and Original Office copy) and 2 x Picking Sheets are printed (for various processes on the factory floor) So, basically it is the same document - but it prints out different information on each as required. All four documents need to be printed at the time of receipt as batch printing will only select one "version" to print.
Similarly, some customers need their invoices in slightly different formats so we use the same methods i.e.. the same information in different formats/templates - we also print a version of this form to behave as a Delivery Docket.
This is the only way that we've been able to manage our production schedule without buying a super costly Manufacturing package.
All the best trying to sort this out. I have used QBX for years and pride myself on being quite efficient ... this afternoon has been a real kick in the teeth trying to re-learn how to do even the simplest navigation has been very frustrating e.g.. tab key tabbing backwards... being able to edit some descriptions directly - but not others (still haven't worked out why ...).
I appreciate that you guys have taken the time to create videos and other guides - but really, time is a luxury that most of us don't have and I for one, have not watched all of them but still expect to be able to work the programme after all of these years.

Thanks Vivien. Greatly appreciated. I am a 15 year user myself so I do understand your frustrations today with a multi-document process. We will use that example to work up a best practice process when we revisit the printing process.

As for the TAB issue it is only on a relatively small number of machines so we are still working on that one. The community manages will post the resolution when available.

Thanks again,
Jason

Hi Jason
We provide football training for Kindys in Melbourne & Gold Coast. As we are based on the Gold Coast all invoices are sent via email to Melbourne (54 centres with average of 22 children per centre) On the Gold Coast we 56 Centres and we only email some of the invoices for the people that provide this the others which can range from 75 to 100 invoices a day printing. So the batch printing is another step I would have to tick to get the system to work properly instead of just cntrl+print. I was lucky to have not much problem with printing to my local printer and also had the facility for pdf. I have just done a 13 hr day instead of 9. Also the copy paste is just crazy as we have online registrations that we copy and paste to Reckon this is also now time consuming. I have been using QB/Reckon since 1996 and this is the first time I can say that am thinking of changing programs. Sorting this Update! really needs to addressed. I know that I am one person out of all the people that are probably satisfied with the new update but will definitely be losing money if my workload is increased by so much.

Thanks Debra. Yes for the next release we are looking at cloud printing as well as backups to cloud storage and multiple email clients to name a few. I'd like to thank yourself, Vivien and Renee as well for the feedback as this is valuable in the development cycle of the product.

Quite often we only hear the feedback from those with issues (as with most forums), hence the local printer changes, but on a positive we can now use your feedback to work towards a solution for those with differing needs.

Cheers,
Jason

@Jason

thanks you seemt o be the right person to contact for printing. Thanks for listening to above. I have also made following suggestions elsewhere, would really increase the user friendlyness if something very simple like following were implemented:

When mouse clicking "print", it would speed up the process if "print" would already be highlighted as a default rather than "option", so you can just hit "enter" on the keyboard rather than have to make another mouse click.

If the entire printing process would be reduced to keyboard inputs rather than mouse, I think this would speed the process up sufficiently to keep most users happy.

Quote also from gramps376:

"Better yet, clicking the print button in RAH could open the PDF straight away (there's no print options available anyway) and javascript could bring up the print dialogue in the PDF reader. This would then be the same number of clicks as before, just a little extra load time."

Thanks, your involvement here is very much appreciated.

Thanks Krischan, I am forwarding all feedback directly to the Dev team.

The first step was to remove local printers. Now we can improve on the process.

NB. There are some browser security issues (in some browsers) that won't let us print straight to PDF, and we also have to support multiple browsers and multiple OS and devices but we will work through it.

That's because you're one of the lucky few who had a lot of luck with local printers. Most people didn't have so much joy with them. The PDF thing is to make it smoother for the majority who used to have printers drop out.

But that's the whole point, functionality has been lost with a whole lot more time uploading and downloading just to print an invoice or a report.  The amount of extra steps and time wasting is the problem.  Also I do not like having to save 1000's of pdf document to my computer over a year just so I can print them this time and into the future.

You don't need to save them all. You can always generate them again from Reckon.
Also large reports will print faster on the new system as they're compiled at Reckon's end then sent to you, rather than being compiled across the internet.

I understand that they are looking at streamlining the process of PDF printing after feedback from New Zealand.

I understand where those are coming from who never had a problem printing but there are a large number who were having repeated issues with printing.  From what I understand it's not possible to provide both options.

We run Macs in our environment. Citrix printing was perfect - worked on all printers without any problems and was IMMEDIATE.  Now we have to go via PDFs.  I think this is definitely a backward step - we are generating many invoices each day in 2 different cities and now every invoice we print has to go via PDF - It's crazy. Really you guys are covering up what was a Windows deficiency by going to PDFs but taking everyone backwards in terms of our daily work effort :(

We run Macs as well and am sick of the lack of support ... no desktop version for us. @debraM

Sorry, may I ask why you need to print the invoices on pre-printed letterheads? The invoices we print, are printed with company letterheads set up in RECKON. The options provided for customising your invoice, defining column widths, invoice content to be printed etc, placing company logo etc are very extensive and you can make your invoice look pretty much however you want straight in RECKON. or have I misunderstood you? Thanks

Our letterhead has been set up as our header for invoice printing and is high quality multi-coloured (greys / blues).  I print on a laser printer so it would only come out in grey scale. As a small regional business I can't afford a printer that would be fast and print high enough colour quality to match the printer's version.

Krischan

  • 1,328 Points 1k badge 2x thumb
Hm ok, understand. We are also a small regional company and to save on printing cost also just print black and white printed invoices. I don't really see the need for an invoice to be fancy and in colour - guess that may may be important for your case. Depends on how importnt that aspect is then, whether it is worth the extra hassle.

Agreed @Krischan, and the feedback we have received has primarily been for users that print multi-document types (not multi-documents as this can be easily managed by batch printing or batch emailing).

One thing to note re @Sylvia's comment, is that we are seeing more and more auto-coding products come onto the market (different to bank feeds - ones that will read the suppliers invoice line by line and code the transaction in your software as per the invoice - tax codes and all), and the most reliable are those that read the meta data in a pdf generated directly from software (not scanning the document and then using OCR to capture the data).

We will most likely see a drive towards suppliers being asked to provide PDF documents to their customers once more and more businesses take up this technology. Not to mention some of the B2B stuff coming online.

Ok, this thread is now a month old.  Can we get some sort of an update on where the fix for the printing issues are in the development process.

It is obviously an issue for a substantial number of users so it should be high on the list of fixes to be implemented.

Similarly, the other two issues that constantly arise in these forums.  "Cut & Paste" and emailing problems and reporting.

Please tell us that these are being addressed and some sort of timeline.
