APS: Virtual Cabinet add-in is not in the Add-Ins ribbon

The Virtual Cabinet tab not showing in MS Outlook. The add-in is not in the Add-Ins ribbon.

There are two causes for this:
  • The Virtual Cabinet Add-in needs to be removed and reinstalled to restore it.
  • The Virtual Cabinet Add-in could be disabled in MS Outlook.

To remove and reinstall the Virtual Cabinet Add-In:

Close all MS Office applications: MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel.

Open Virtual Cabinet

Click on the Virtual Cabinet Settings option in top left corner.

Select Microsoft Office Addin option and then select the Remove Office Addin option.

This will remove the Virtual Cabinet Add-in from all MS Office Applications.

The Add-ins will now be installed again.

Click on the Virtual Cabinet Settings option again.

Select Microsoft Office Addin option and then select the Install Office Addin option.

The Add-ins will be installed

Open MS Outlook to confirm the Virtual Cabinet Add-in is available.

If the Virtual Cabinet Add-in is still not available, it may be disabled in MS Outlook.

To re-enable the Add-In:

Open MS Outlook

Click on File > Options

In the Add-ins, select Disabled Items and click on GO

Check if Virtual Cabinet Office Addin for Outlook is Disabled.

If it is, click on the add-in and click on Enable to restore the Add-in in MS Outlook.

The Add-in should now appear in MS Outlook in the Add-ins Ribbon.

We constantly get this issue when users report that one of the Microsoft suite of products crashes, then leaves the Add-In(s) disabled. 9 out of 10 times this will work to remove and re-add or enable the add-in to the ribbon.

I have read the prerequisites guide and our systems are utilising all of the requirements:

  • OS - Windows 7: 32-bit Microsoft Office 2010

  • .Net Framework 3.5 or higher

  • Microsoft Office Primary Interop Assemblies

  • Visual Studio Tools for the Office system 3.0 Runtime – 2010 version installed for x86

However, we have had numerous occasions where it won't install or will keep defaulting to a disabled Add-In unless we delete the users Windows profile (maily the local %Appdata% settings) and start again...lucky we have backups.

The question is, how can we automatically re-enable these add-ins with a registry change, script file, GPO or similar? Therefore if they do disable then the next time a user logs in or restarts the Add-In and will become active again?

Yes, the addin can be re-enabled by changing the registry entries for the VC Addin for the office products. There is also a registry key that can be added to stop Outlook from disabling the Addin.
