I have been using CB 2004 for while now and have had no issues. Recently I have been getting the error "quicken has encountered an unexpected error and will shut down. Please restart your computer before running quicken again.' every time I select the categories listing.
I have executed the file validation and the super validation and the problem still persists.
Can you please advise a fix?
Please don't recommend an upgrade since there is no product available which will emulate the functionality of CB 2004, AHB 2013 comes close but it does not support invoice payment like CB 2004.
Thanks.

Tony,
The best advice is to backup regularly.
Backup what you have now and then test your previous backups (if any).
If you do have an older backup of the file from a time when you did not yet experience the problem then try opening that older file and check your Categories list to see if crashes.
If that works and does not crash, then continue on from there, re-enter the 'missing' info to bring it up to date.
If it does not work and your older file also crashes, then it is possible your software installation has become corrupted.
Remove the software and re-install it.
Test your most recent older backup to see if it does not the problem.
Test again your more recent file to see if it still experiences the problem.

Thanks for your reply Inigo, I have always backed up my file and I recently tried a version (2011) and it did not error, entering missing data will be too exhaustive since the issue could have happened a few months or even years ago.

Hi Tony,
Have you removed the software and re-installed it?
Is that backp from a 2011 the most recent backup set you have that does not experience the error?

Hi Inigo,
Thanks for your reply.
I have recently updated my laptop from XP, Vista to Windows 7 and re-installed CB 2004. Now, when I select categories, the error message does not appear. However, no categories are shown, it's just like there are no categories at all (but they still exist). If I page down, the original error appears. So it's a little improvement.
Below is an extract from the DATA_LOG file going back to April, 2014.

Looks like this problem may have started back in April this year. I could retrieve a backup copy from then but would be too time consuming to re-enter data from then to now.

Hi Tony,
Consider testing that April backup to see if it is fully intact and displays the categories.
If you're brave enough to continue using that current file then, I guess that's a decision for you to make.
Probably better to actually start a brand new data file for this new financial year.
Alernatively have you also considered moving your file from "CashBook 2004" to the "Reckon Accounts Accounting" program? Maybe converting that file would give you a file that displays the missing info.

Hi Inigo,
I have tried AHB 2013 to convert my file, but the conversion failed with an error message to contact customer support.
I think I will look at starting a new file, can I do this and retain all my current accounts, scheduled transactions and categories ?
Regards,
Tony0
