Half baked SMTP support.

Long have we waited for SMTP support for sending emails. At last in 2016 it is here, but the job is only half done. It is obvious that whoever implemented SMTP did not really understand what is required.

Currently there is no way to specify a login ID that is different to the sender's email address.  This is fundamental to SMTP support.  You should also be able to specify the security protocol (if any) to be used.

What a shame, why didn't the developers at least look at ANY other SMTP implementation (eg. Outlook, Thunderbird etc.)

I never got that far but it doesn't surprise me.  Ours is SMTP direct, we have a single SMTP server that all our accounts use.  The login to the SMTP bears no relationship to the sender's email address.

In most cases like this where the connection is direct to an ISP they don't require a login to access their SMTP server as you have already logged in to the ISP.

However in our case we do require a login to our SMTP server to prevent unauthorised access.

    Hope this explains it.

This is is the standard SMTP setup from Thunderbird.

The only thing that is not specified is the password which entered separately and remembered.  The user name bears no relationship to the user's email address.
The vast majority of SMTP setups are similar (check Outlook).

We do not want user's mail boxes on our SMTP server!!!!  That is why we cannot do what you suggest.
