How do I get custom fields to appear on reports

Under items I have a series of custom fields. I would like to get these to appear on my reporting. when I customise the report and tick the custom field I would like, the heading appears on the report, but the data entered in that field does not appear on the report (in this case a detailed sales by customer report)

    Hi Barbara,

    Thanks for asking.

    For a Custom Field to appear on a report, that custom field must have been displayed on an Invoice.  

    Please modify your invoice template to show this column (you can opt to show it on the screen and not on the print copy) and try again.

    Hi John,

    We have another question regarding these reports.  We have updated the fields on the template as above however the report still does not show these invoices with the fields.  Does it take into account all the invoices created or just the ones from the time the fields were created?
