How do you update a company file?

My work has used QuickBooks in the past and I have a .QBW file that I want to open.

We had misplaced the software to open this document so I sourced a copy of QuickBooks Premier 2011-2012 to try and view this file.

I downloaded this software and went through the following steps:
Open an existing Company File > Open a company file (.QBW) > Selected my file (in .QBW format) > Attempted login

When I tried to login an error came up "This company file needs to be updated. Contact your QuickBooks Administrator".

Does anyone know how to update this file?

Hi IEC, welcome to the Reckon Community,

There's some info in this KB article on how to handle that particular message/situation -
The company file needs to be updated message when opening a client’s company file

    Hello

Depending on the age of the data file if it is a version 7 or version 8.

You may need to upgrade through.
    2002
    2007/08

The above two had major changes to data base structure and must be upgraded.

    Then the 2011/12
