Merging items

We have created multiple items for one product so we would track/invoice sales from multi site warehouses around Australia. Now we would like them to go back to just the one item as this wasn't an effective for our business. I see that you can merge items easily enough, but are there any implications i should know about? What will happen to the on hand quantities?

We no longer need multiple product codes for what is essentially a single product. We want to tidy it up and moving forward only use the one product code (makes reporting a whole lot easier).

Example - we have a product 18PinotGris and V18PinotGris. This is the same product, however one is for stock here, and the one beginning with V is for stock in Victoria. When we transfer stock to the Victorian warehouse we decrease the stock for 18PinotGris and increase the stock on hand level for product V18Pinot Gris. When we invoice stock that leaves the Victorian warehouse to a customer, we use the V18PinotGris item. This enabled us to see what stock we have and where...in theory. However, it hasn't gone to plan, and the stock levels weren't getting updated so now we have a huge item list with completely incorrect stock on hand levels for our interstate warehouses. So now, I want to merge V18PinotGris with 18PinotGris and return to just using one item. this needs to be done for dozens of items.

    Is this clear?
