Online version of personal accounting

Hi.  I am a long term user of Reckon Personal Accounts and am due to upgrade shortly.  I was wondering if there is a personal version of Reckon One.  Or more importantly an online version of the personal range.

I would prefer an online version as these days I use multiple machines include several laptops, an android tablet and an iphone.

I have seen plenty of packages by others but would prefer to stay with the Reckon brand and migrate my old data.

Also, while I am at it, can anyone help me with a different issue which is setting my budget to be fortnightly.

Regards

Yes I was referring to Reckon Personal.  That is a pity.  Thanks for the feedback.

Hi Davin,

Not as yet but I believe we may look at introducing some of the functionality from the Personal Range into Reckon One for users to take advantage of the benefits the cloud platform provides, this is however much more on the longer term in terms of timeframe.

There must be a way to access your desktop QB from other machines/places if you were to leave it running. What about a home server - would that work / be necessary?

Hi David,

We can migrate data from Personal Desktop to Reckon One. However we need to understand what functionality you require, so please email Rav our community manager at community@reckon.com Attention Jason Hollis; include your contact details and I'll get in touch with you regarding options.

Hi Jason, any chance Reckon is working on a cloud based platform for personal finances?  It is really about time don't you think?

Hi Johnathon. Great question.

In short 1. yes we are, and 2. we do have an applicable tool right now for the low-touch personal user.

In detail... We have actively been planning 'personal' type functionality for the Reckon One core module ($5/mth) over the last few weeks. To add to the personal chart of accounts we included a while back, we want to include classification (tag) tracking at the line level, dashboard reporting, alerts, and bulk updates of data for fixing mistakes .

On top of this, we released new functionality last month to enable the ability to mix n' match income accounts and expense accounts as well as positive and negative amounts on the same transaction. We also added document attachment to purchase transactions in late December. These 2 features are something Reckon desktop personal has always been able to do.

Our customer research is telling us there are 2 types of customers for personal > those who simply want to track their income and expenses with a bank feed, and maybe a budget plus some reporting. You can get that now in Reckon One for $10/mth (core + bank feeds).

The second customer, and these make up a lot of our desktop personal users, want a share registry and less so, the ability to track rental properties income/expenses/depreciation. They also want customisable / configurable reporting tools and dashboards, as well as access via a smart phone or tablet.

Whilst desktop personal still has a very strong user base, we realise that all of the benefits of the cloud (automated bank feeds, dedicated mobile app, access anywhere etc...) are just as applicable for personal users, and that is what we are designing for in all new iterations of Reckon One. That is.. are what we are building applicable to businesses, accountants, bookkeepers, and personal users? We try and answer YES to all 4 where we can to help prioritise work.

We then of course need to look at the 'personal only' type functionality such as a share registry which gets a little more complex, but has to be done if we want to satisfy a high percentage of current desktop users in a cloud world.

I hope that helps clarify our thinking,
Jason

Reckon One seems like a great product.  I would like to migrate data from Reckon Personal Accounts.  Can I?  If I have to re-key data, I may as well shop around for alternatives, yes?

Reckon don't give a stuff about 'personal' users. they have been intimating upgrades/functionality/cloud/Mac/etc etc for YEARS. Nothing ever happens.

Kym what kind of upgrades are you after? What do you want to do that you can't already?

I'd like to use it on a Mac. Reckon Personal only works on Windows, and promises have been made for years about upgrading such things without anything changing. I have used Intuit/Reckon/Quicken for about 30 years and have been very happy with it but it seems isolationist for 'personal' users in Australia.

My issue at the moment relates to annual upgrades. "I have just installed Reckon Personal Plus 2020 and I cannot register online, nor connect to the internet. All other internet access (programs etc) work fine through Chrome. Any ideas why this version blocks me? I use a virtual machine on an iMac and have not had any problems with past versions." Nothing heard elsewhere on this thread so far. R U able to suggest what my problem is with internet connection failing in the 2020 version?

Kym the market in Australia is infinitesimally small. Reckon might sell four copies. It's simply about economics. It isn't going to happen

Any idea about the internet? Is it because I am still on WinXP and Internet Explorer8? Can I instruct the program to use Chrome as it's default browser?

In the past, PP worked in WinXP in compatibility mode on my virtual machine. Obviously this year they weren't 'joking' about Win7/8/10. I will need to upgrade. Thanks.

Hi Jason Hollis - me again - six months on.  Any news or updates for a cloud based personal platform that tracks share & property portfolios?  Not having this functionality is leading me to consider an alternate option.  While this may not be a great loss (one personal account) it does mean I will move my four companies also.

Hi Jonathon,

We concluded our user research in July and 3 things became clear. Any 'new' personal solution must:
  • Be mobile device ready (phone / tablet).
  • Have live bank feeds.
  • Have an integrated share register.
Current Reckon Personal customers I personally interviewed by in large preferred to stay desktop, however those that did want a cloud / mobile solution all wanted data migrated from Reckon Personal / Home & Business if given the option.

So what have we done so far (as some of the answers above we already suspected)....

Mobile:
  • This year we have built a mobile development team from scratch and in late May 2019 they released our first product in the new suite, Reckon Single Touch Payroll (STP). See HERE for more details.
  • The next app will be due in early 2020.
  • We will continue to work through the current Reckon One modules until we reach CORE (what is needed for personal finance) however this is likely to be over a year away at least.
Bank feeds:
  • This a critical to the offering, however unlike some current personal finance apps our customers told us they wanted their data feeds direct from the banks and not via "screen scraping" (where you need to provide your online banking login details to a service provider).
This was not possible for ALL banks (well it was possible with the agreement of the particular financial institution which isn't mandatory to provide) until the Consumer Data Rights extended to banking. This was due to go live for the majority of "Big 4" accounts on July 1 of this year. This was then extended to Feb 2020 (see https://treasury.gov.au/consumer-data-right for full details and timelines).
  • The good news... we have been working on open banking for the last few months and we will be in a position to provide these direct feeds via open banking APIs when each data feed comes online.
Share register:
  • It is unlikely we will build our own register with some very good online offerings already available. We will therefore likely partner with an existing vendor and those discussions are ongoing. Unfortunately finding the right fit for our customers, and Reckon, has not been as easy as we would have liked.
Data migration:

Also refer to the above question from Tony C.
I would like to migrate data from Reckon Personal Accounts.  Can I?
At this time, we can import customers, suppliers, categories (chart of accounts) and opening balances but not transactional data. We also agree that re-keying is not optimal, so we have designed an export from Personal to aid in the migration when we get to this project.

As you can see there are lots of moving parts, and whilst we know this is important to some users, we want to build the right products at the right time to cater for as many current customers as possible across our entire product range (which is substantial), but also new customers who work in different ways to that of 15-20 years ago.

So in summary, there is a plan, it is in motion as you can see, and that plan includes a personal product. However it is important to note the delivery timeline of each specific product and service may not suit everyone, and we have to be ok with that in order to deliver on our development strategy.

Kind regards,
Jason

HI Jason, I really appreciated the reply.

I can also appreciate the significant number of moving parts.  I also write this as a Reckon user and loyalist from before the spit.

As an aside, moving my business to Reckon One from H&B was a nightmare with no real data migration other than Reckon charging by the line (and mucking nearly every one of them up) - it was a real issue.

I assume the reckon personal customers you personally interviewed who wanted to stay on desktop were telling porkies or were cherry picked.  Even my 87 yr old granddad wants a cloud option.

STP? I use the web version for my businesses. Not sure why you would make that the first stop for a mobile app.  Given the process is anything but single touch - how many business are paying wages on their mobiles.  I'd suggest that may be more gimmick than genuine app.

Yes, open banking will make data access easier.    However - you already have the ability for bank feeds in One etc.  While they are less than ideal it is still an option.  And to be brutally honest - most Australians would have absolutely no idea about the difference between a live feed and data scraping.  None whatsoever. So again, i think this is another cherry picked sticking point that would apply to a generous 6 people in Australia.

The complexity comes with the share registry / tracking assets which is tricky.  But surely as you point out an agreement and integration with an existing player should be easy enough for Reckon to manage.

Actually - while on this - is there a move to get any sort of inventory management / asset tracking in One?  That would be handy for businesses also!!

It seems to me that there isn't much of a plan at all - just crafted excuses as to why Reckon doesn't have a cloud based personal program (share registry or otherwise).

I may even be so bold as to suggest given Reckon is still struggling to get a cloud based product out in 2019 shows either they have completely dropped the ball or couldn't care less.

I wonder.

Hi Denise,
To give you an update on where things are currently; an online version of personal range product has been approved as a project however we feel that its absolutely necessary to complement this product with a mobile app.

As such, both projects have been added to our roadmap and we hope to be in a position to commence work on this late next year pending the completion of current projects in the pipeline.
Our current focus is on our business mobile apps, you may have seen that we've already released two mobile apps; Reckon STP and Reckon Payroll with a 3rd app due this quarter, followed by another in Q4 so the team have a fairly packed line-up in their to-do list.

A recommendation that I would like to make to you and others in this thread however is to add your vote to the feature request that a fellow user has raised in our Reckon Ideas Portal for this. Check it out here - https://ideas.reckon.com/ideas/RKN1-I-701
At the moment its only received one vote but I'd highly recommend you & others add to it as you no doubt would find this beneficial to your use of the product.

Reckon Ideas is a user driven ideas portal where you can raise feature & functionality requests and ideas, fellow users can then add their vote to it.
Our teams monitor this portal quite closely to look at what features users would like to see or are important to them based on votes, and then make decisions on what we can feasibly add or implement into our roadmap where possible.
