paths in ND file being modified periodically - multi user access problem

Hi All,

We have a Windows 2011 Small Business Server that hosts the reckon files.  Two users run Reckon from their Windows 7 64 bit PC's.  The software was updated to the latest version it was all installed recently

Multi user access works, the firewall has the correct port open, the QBDataServiceUser24 has access to the permissions to access the shared folder and the QuickBooksDB24 service is running.  I have reduced the memory used by Exchange just in case. Both users open the file in multi-user mode.

As I said, it works, but at least once a week, the contents of the ND file are changed (and I assume it is by one of the client Quickbooks programs).

The FilePath setting is changed from it's correct local path to a full UNC path.  After this, one or both the users cannot open the file.  Once the FilePath is corrected, everything works again.

I have created a batch file so that the users can reset the .ND file by themselves when the problem occurs.  I tried making the file .ND file readonly, but that stopped the file being opened quickbooks completely.

Any clues on how to solve this one would be appreciated.

Make sure your windows 7 PC have client only installed, I'd say one or both are rewriting the nd file, as nd files are written 2 ways either by opening the file from RA Client (to which the server and client is installed on) or by searching for the file using Database Manager (which should be done on the server hosting the file)

The reason it is rewriting it to the full unc path, its getting that information from the client using the mapped drive, so one of the clients must have a database server installed on it.

You don't need to uninstall the server on the client, just go to File > Utilities > Stop Hosting Multi-User Access

Both have the QBServerUtilityMgr.exe installed and both also have a windows service called QBCFMonitorService installed (like on the server). But only the server QuickBooksDB24 service installed.

If I had installed the client & server version on the client PC's wouldn't the QuickBooksDB24 service be present?

Also, the  QBCFMonitorService service was only active on one of the client PC's.  I don't remember turning it off on the other one.

As far as I know, neither of them are using the Host multi access' option though.  I am using remote desktop to look at one of them now. Under Utilities, there is an entry for Host Multi-User access, but there isn't a tick next to it.  I have talked to the both users about that and they don't use it.  They both open in Multi User mode.

I did read that opening in single user mode and then multi user mode again can resolve the problem, but this only appeared to work once or twice and they don't bother trying it now, they just call me.

I have disabled on the monitor service on the PC where it was running and will see if that changes anything.

QBCFMonitorService shouldn't be running, as they don't run under client only.

I would install client only option on the 2 clients see if that resolves your issue.

As far as I can tell, the client only option is what is installed, otherwise the QuickBooksDB24 would be installed on the clients.

The client where the monitor service was set to automatic has quickbooks open most of the time.  It is also where we tried the recommended 'open in single, open in multi' routine.  I now wonder if that turned on the monitor service and that the original problem was causes by something else.

I have just remembered that one fix was to restart the QuickBooksDB24 on the server, but that might have been a coincidence.

I am supporting this remotely.  I would rather find out what is causing the issue rather than reinstall.  If I have made a mistake with the installation, then I will be glad when that is realised.  At this point, I can't see any evidence that I have installed the server software on the client PCs.

It doesn't look like its installed as you describe, the monitor service should be disabled on both clients, delete or rename nd file, then on the server with the Database Manager locate the file again this should create a new nd file. Also make sure the folder that contains your qbw file is excluded from antivirus software (for process of elimination). I don't see why it would rewrite the nd file with the unc with that setup. Let us know how you go.

Only other thing on the server are the services set the Automatic?
