Quick Books V 7.1 transfer to newer computer problem

I am using a very old version (7.1) of QB (circa early 2000's) installed on an equally old PC running windows XP. Ihave been backing up regularly to an external hard drive. Unfortunately my old PC has crashed and I need to access my data. I have installed the QB V7.1 from the original program install disc on another PC running Windows 7. When I try to access the backup files from the external drive I get a message saying warning unable to open as the files are from a NEWER version of QuickBooks ! Can someone please help - I am ready and willing to update but require the data ?? Thanks for any help, Alan

Sounds like the DATA contains the tax file update (ie: R2) release. Every year, the BASE product (R1) gets an update just on the eve of the financial NEW YEAR. So you'll be needing to upgrade the v7.1 on the replacement PC to v7.1 R2 with the small tax table update, I'm guessing.

Then the PROGRAM will be at the same release level, as the data files you are trying to fetch back from your backups.

Given that QB / Reckon don't offer support back to anywhere near this vintage how would I go about finding this upgrade / update to the original program ?

FINAL solution was that 7.1 was upgraded to 7.2 7.3 7.4 7.5 (unlike present day R1 / R2 approach). The DATA was in 7.4 format, so the program just needed updating from 7.1 to 7.4 (for the record.) (Thanks to K.R. (Geelong) for the 7.5 reminder too!.)
