Why can't I open a newly created year-end Reckon Personal file?

I have just tried to get create a year end copy of my quicken file. Everytime I try I get the response - "Unable to open the data file". It appears that Quicken cannot open the copy it just made??? This has been a bug in Quicken Personal Plus 2011 & Quicken 2013. How can I make a year end copy and delete transactions in my current file up to a specific date if the wizard doesn't work?

    Hi John,

Try moving your archive file from your W drive to your My Documents folder or Desktop and try opening it again.  Let me know how it goes.

    Shane.

No, that doesn't work either. The process appears to rename my original file adding BKP to the file name, but does not create an archive. The only way that I can then access my original file is to go back in and rename it back to the original name. I have tried this process numerous times before on different drives and still get the same response.

I expected more of Quicken. It is a very frustrating and disappointing programme.

I have another idea you can try if you like.  Create 2 new folders on your desktop called Quicken Data and Quicken Year End.  Restore your backup into the Quicken Data folder.  Rename your data file to QDATA using the built in rename function (File > File Operations > Rename).  Create a year end copy again saving the archive file to the Quicken Year End folder.  If that fails here are a few other ideas:
    • Validate the file and try again
    • Try archive just 1 years data at a time
    • Try different options when creating year end copy
    Regards,
    Shane.

None of these options worked either, same response. Surely creating a year end backup shouldn't be this hard. I am an IT Consultant by trade so I can assure you that I have exhausted my options.

Think I will revert to my old faithful Microsoft Money software. It has less issues than Quicken.

As far as value for money goes, Quicken sucks.

    Hi John,

sorry to hear that you are still having issues.

Anyway, to isolate the issue further - if it's the network or just the file itself, you can try the following:

    1) If the file is on the network drive, copy it to the local C drive.
    2) Once the file is on the local C drive, validate the file.
    3) Then perform a normal backup of the file to local C drive, and then restore that backup to double check
    4) Then perform a year end copy to local C drive.

Please let us know the result.

    Regards,
    Michael

    Michael

Thank you for your response. I followed your instructions implicitly and guess what? NO DIFFERENCE, it still bombs out.

It looks to me like the coding in the software has been faulty from the start. I'd like to mention that I have experienced exactly the same issue with both Quicken Personal Plus 2011 & 2013 versions. I have used this software on three different computers (all with individual licences) and experienced the same issue whilst trying to perform this task.

    Hi John,

Thank you for performing the tests as you have eliminated the network part.
To see if the issue is with the software or just file-related, can you perform the same tests on the sample company file?

    Regards,
    Michael

It's definitely a software issue. The same problem occurred in Quicken 2011 & 2013 Personal Plus. The same problem occurred on different computers and different files.

    It simply doesn't work.

    Hi John,

can you create two year end copies on the sample company, with each of the options selected.

That is, first year end copy would be:

      - Do nothing. My current data file will remain unchanged

and second year end copy would be:

      - I only want transactions in my current data file starting with this date

Do you still get the same result?

    Regards,

    Michael

    Michael

I am not pursuing this issue anymore. It doesn't work - period.

I don't have time to mess around with sample files.

    The software is obviously faulty.

    Hi John,

While it could very well be a software issue we are unable to replicate this exact error at our end.

This leads us to believe that it could be an issue with your Reckon Accounts data file.

I will leave this thread open in case you change your mind regarding further troubleshooting.

    Cheers, Andrew

    Hello Andrew

    You can close the thread.

I am changing to another money program. I am very disappointed
    with Quicken’s performance.

Apart from this back-up issue, which has existed in both Quicken
    Personal Plus 2011 & 2013 –
    • the Quicken files are not compatible with any other version of
      your own product

    • the attachment facility doesn’t work with newer printers – the
drivers are not recognised. I had to ditch a new printer and go back to my old
one to use this facility. Reading various threads in forums on the internet
this is an ongoing issue for many versions of your product.

    • The links within the program to renew licences never worked. I
ended up having to ring to renew the product. Then I had to wait for a copy in
      the mail – bit archaic???

      Thank you
