Hi everyone,

I am new to here, need help please.

I am looking to get a pos system for my shop, tried couple different pos system softwares, and downloaded the trail version of reckon pos pro 2014, but can not find any way to add an attribute for an stock item such as size, color  style etc, i will stick with reckon if i can define the attributes. this is most important to me.

and also can not find any way to add new or remove the item in the database(assume this will be not a problem in the full version), i need training  to use this product.

finally, this is a 90 days trail version, the administrator part is still working, but the terminal part stop working after 10 days, is there anything wrong with my computer or the software is designed in this way? I just ran the terminal part once after installation, i thought that will last 90 day, and test run later, but try it this morning, ask me for a key. thank you for helping the questions.

Dave I don't believe Reckon Pos is appropriate for this job. There are much better software suites around. More expensive but much better suited to the task.

Reckon POS is not without its limitations.  However, its strengths are that it integrates with Reckon Accounts and is relatively inexpensive.  As Kevin V Russell wrote, there are more expensive alternatives.  To answer the question about attributes for a stock item, in Reckon POS an Item is something you sell whether it be a service or inventory or non-inventory article.  If you want to distinguish between a stock item with different sizes, colours, styles etc, you would need to create separate Items for each variant.  For example, you could have an Item "Shirts", a Sub-item of "Shirts" called "Shirts:Large", another Sub-Item of "Shirts" called "Shirts:Large: White", another Sub-item of "Shirts", "Shirts:Large:Blue" and so on.  Clearly the combinations of attributes can be very large if you have many ways of distinguishing between a generic Item such as "Shirts".  You can create a hierarchy of Items with the use of a decimal system of codes rather than long text based descriptors.  Each numerically based Item can still have a text based Description which appears on Sales Receipts/Tax Invoices.  It is very important to plan your approach and the structure of the Items and Sub-items you intend to use.

Yeah Kevin I think I might have understood the question creating a separate item kind of defeats the purpose. Doesn't it? Of course if you are determined to use Pos you can make it fit. I think there are better alternatives. Just my two cents. Oh I've only been using Pos for 15 years by the way.

I thought Dave was asking how it might be done with Reckon POS.  Perhaps you might provide an alternative solution with the associated costs.  My experience over 43 years has taught me that every client is limited by budget.  The question is what can be achieved within their budget even though the solution may be less than optimal.  There was no intended inference that you did not understand that the Reckon POS solution lies with the creation of Items.  However, the existence of your knowledge does not mean that Dave had any idea as to the solution within Reckon POS.  We approached the problem from different perspectives.

I understand that very well and I also understand that even working within a budget there may be more appropriate solutions depending on how you approach the problem . Since money was never mentioned at the outset it was worth mentioning other solutions might achieve the desired objective where Reckon might struggle.

    Hi David,

You would need to create a new item for each individual product per size, colour, style, etc. (as mentioned previously).

Once this item has been created though it cannot be removed. It can be made inactive so not to be sold again, but it will still remain as part of your maximum item base (approximately 10-15,000, unless you look at the Enterprise version which is unlimited).

You should be able to activate the terminal over the internet or phone to last you 90 days.

    Kind regards,
