I'm using Quickbooks Accounting Small Business Edition 2010-2011.  I want to 'retire' the computer I am using it on, and reinstall to my new desktop.  Can you advise me how to de-register the package on the old PC and register it on the new PC, in such a way that I don't lose access to my company files.  I do have my company files backed up in .QBB format in three separate locations using the <File> <Save copy or backup> command.

    Hi Scott,

    - check your backups are in good condition
    - install and register the software on the new computer
    - restore the backup onto the new computer
    - check your restored file is okay
    - un-install/remove the software from the older computer

I have the same version but cannot open at all. Any idea why or what I need to do?

I couldn't find a free QuickBooks replacement that would import my QuickBooks data, so I wrote my own. You can read about it, and download a free copy to try, at www.trumphurst.com/accounts.php. I have lots of experience in accounting software, having once been Technical Director of an accounting software company (anyone remember Omicron Management Software?).

I'm happy to give it a go, but (you will understand, and please take this in the nicest possible way) since I don't know you I'd need to install on a separate non-networked PC, just in case it's nasty software.

Hi Scott - I understand your concerns, and would be prepared to give you access to the source code if you want to use it in a production environment. I am not sure whether to open source it anyway - haven't decided yet.
You can contact me direct via email nikki at trumphurst dot com if you want any help.
