Trading vs Company name on Pay Slips & Reports

Hi Rav,

As you're aware a lot of uses of Payroll Premier were required to change their payroll file names to match the company name opposed to a trading name to allow the STP registration to work.

This isn't preferred by our clients, and it's confusing to employees.

Is there an update coming to allow the trading name to be used on pay slips instead of the company name?

Cheers,

Kali

Hi Kali. It is our belief that in NOT correct. The file name has never had to be changed and we have been STP lodging since 1 July 2018. The company legal name will be used by the ATO and this has to be the same as the legal name entered into the company information in your Payroll Premier file. The file may be named with your trading name, but that does not matter. All the company information, case sensitive as well, MUST be the same as the ATO has on the Business page when you log into the ATO. Hope this helps.

    Hi Helen,

Thanks for your response; however, I apologise, i think i have confused you when i said 'file name'. It is not the 'file name' i am speaking of its the 'company name'.

The pay report and pay slips uses the 'company name' field to populate the name that appears on the pay reports & pay slips.

So by changing this to to the company legal name to allow STP registration to work; changes the name that appears on the reports and pay slips.

    Cheers,

    Kali

Thanks Kali. However, let me stress that your company name details MUST be the same as the ATO has on their website. They are case sensitive. Hope this helps. Cheers Helen.

Kali, perhaps I should have said that an email to all those recipients to explain the reasons for the change to the legal company name would be a good way to advise them what is about to happen. Cheers Helen.

Can you direct me to where it states the employer's name on an employee's pay slip is required to be the legal name opposed to the trading name?

The Payroll software is designed to adhere to tax law and the ATO now demands that all payrolls will comply with the new STP requirements. I do believe that the legal name of the paying company must always be used for banking, ATO interaction, on letterheads etc. Trading names (which of course must also be registered) are just that: often a name more closely associated with the type of business carried on. However, they are not the legal names. As STP now interacts with the ATO, you must use the legal name. Have a look at your Pay Slips (under Reports) as there is a section that allows you to place a message on the Pay Slip. How about putting your trading name in the message area? Perhaps this will assist your employees/clients?

If that's the case shouldn't Reckon fix the character issue so the names can appear in full opposed to a culled version? Some legal trust names are very long
