I am using Quicken Personal 2011 and getting the following error message "the current user does not have privileges to open this data file" I decided to upgrade to Reckon Personal Plus. I have downloaded the trial version but it will not install due to quicken being on the pc. If I removed Quicken will Reckon Personal Plus read the old Quicken file and will I be able to access it. I am using Windows 10 and Quicken had been working fine until today.

I have just upgraded from Quicken 2002 to Personal plus 2016 with no problem but have to admit I had never received the error message you are getting. The upgrade for me was much easier then I thought it would be. Naturally make sure you have backups of the data file. I had backups on hard drive and external drives but did not need either.

    Hi Bernard,

You are getting the first error message possibly because you have not upgraded to later versions of Quicken/Reckon Accounts since 2011. I noticed recently when the upgrades are offered that there is a a warning that you may not be able to access your data if you don't upgrade. I personally feel that this is unethical since it is your data. However, that seems to be the way it is.

Secondly to overcome the second issue, you may have to remove the old version of Quicken and then install the new one. But, I am not sure if the program will automatically save your old data for the new version. Do you have a backup of data on a USB stick or elsewhere?

    good luck,

    Kel Luke

Hi Les, I think Kel is on the ball with his reply - your Quicken 2002 is too many versions back to upgrade straight to current version,. If you hop on the internet and have a google for the PDF of Reckon Personal Plus 2016 Installation Manual (or maybe User Manual, I forget the exact title) there is a section that shows you the upgrade paths for all the different versions of the software. From memory I think you will have to install at least one older version (Quicken 2006?) before you can upgrade to Reckon 2016.

Actually when I installed Personal Plus 2016 I was expecting to have to go via a different version but it did not need it (or if it did it was seamless). Have to admit I was very worried but install went great.
