I want to have Quickbooks and QuickPOS on the same PC, but it appears that the barcode scanner has to be programmed with a tilde (~) prefix for POS, but without for QuickBooks. Does anyone know if there is a way of working around this? Thanks in advance

Contact either reckon or Senor tech for the appropriate programming codes for the scanner. With tilda prefix for pos and without tilda prefix for reckon. Also in reckon change the preference to use enter to move between fields or it will keep trying to save after every item you scan. Chris1

I have clients who prefixed all their Item names with the ~ to get around this instead of programming the barcode scanner with a ~ prefix. Like Chris mentions with the old Datalogic scanners supplied by Reckon you could get two programming barcodes where you could easily scan one and use the scanner with POS and scan the other and use it with Reckon Accounts (QuickBooks). It seems with the Senor scanners now supplied this is not possible - I took this up with Tech Support at Senor and despite giving it a good try they couldn't seem to come up with the same quick-switch solution. I'm not sure about other brands?

Sorry should have been more specific regarding the Item setup.
- Item Name field: ~<barcode><space><name/code> (total 31 characters without angle brackets). Thank you Graham Boast (Reckon Accredited Partner) for discovering this fantastic workaround when using the barcode in the item name field to allow the Sales by Item Summary report readable!!!
- Barcode field: barcode only
- Custom field Product Number: Name only
- Custom field Product Barcode: Barcode only
Trust I have remembered correctly.

I have looked at this a number of times but given that you can get a "generic" barcode scanner for $50 it is not worth the time and hassle or programming and reprogramming the scanner.
There is no native support for barcoding in Reckon Accounting products so for those clients that are wanting to do this I would recommend having a look at using Smart Scan by Baus Systems http://www.baus-systems.com/ssbt.html. This will allow you to setup independent barcodes in the Smart Scan software which are mapped to the item code in Reckon/QuickBooks. I have used this with earlier versions of QuickBooks but not more recent versions of Reckon.
This will lead onto other helpful inventory tools that Baus Systems have for printing barcode labels and using Stock Scanners direct from QuickBooks.0
