Hi

How can get around the mandatory backups that I've forced to make when trying to open my files in Reckon Accounts Premier Edition 2021?

I have several large files to convert and I've been trying all night to get past this backup stage all night and they just keep hanging. (The window just says "Not Responding".)

We have plenty of our own backups so we do not need more bit there's no way to bypass the backup stage when upgrading.

I've tried creating the backups with verifiction turned off, but all that happens then is the progress bar rapidly gets to 40% or so (instead of sitting at 2%) but it then it crashes like usual.

I don't know if it's significant or nor, but the backup of one of our files always fail when it reaches 391979kb.

What is particularly annoying about this is that we don't even want to upgrade and had purchased a full license for Reckon 2016 which was adequate for our needs. But we since discovered that Reckon is a form of ransomware and they sent us an email telling us that they are going to cripple our product if we don't pay them more money for a new license.

Then after being blackmailed into buying and installing an upgrade that we don't need or want, we discovered that the QODBC driver that is essential to our operations doesn't work with this new Reckon version, so we had to shell out another $1000 to upgrade it as well.

Now, we're looking at loosing thousands of dollars in lost wages because our operation has now ground to a halt because Reckon insists on trying to create backups that it is actually unable to create.

I don't know where we go for here .... thanks Reckon, your ransomware has successfully crippled our business - well done!

Spoke to support and apparently there's no way to get around doing the backups. So we've just paid out $2000 just to get screwed over.

Whilst not recommended, Backups can be overridden when necessary (eg in situations like this) by clicking Esc immediately the Backup commences or when running a Rebuild, by holding down Ctrl

NB: Due to Hosted not being on your local PC, it may be necessary to download the file locally to do this override (& the upgrade) then upload the file back on to the Hosted platform once upgraded.

Second call to support provided the answer to getting around the backup issue.

So for anyone else stuck in this loop, the secret is to export a portable version (.QBM) of the company file from the old Reckon version then open it in the new version.

Reckon will recommend making a backup when you open the file in the new version, but you can click "Cancel" and still successfully open the file.

This should be written in large letters somewhere for everyone to see.

This isn’t specific to the Portable file - either Esc or Cancel can work (depends on the system/browser being used I think) on the original file also, but in any case, you have to hit Esc / Cancel very quickly to register it before the Backup commences 😊
