Hi Terry
You should be able to upgrade the file directly:
- Install Reckon Accounts 2014
- Open Reckon Accounts 2014 & choose to "Open an existing Company File"
- Locate your Company File (In Windows XP > C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\ Company Files\QuickBooks 20xx-xx or in Windows 7 & Vista > C:\users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\ QuickBooks\ Company Files\ QuickBooks 20xx-xx)
- Reckon Accounts will warn you that your company file will be updated to the current version & will ask you to confirm this by typing "Yes". (Reckon Accounts will backup your company file before upgrading as a precaution)
- That's it! Your company file should now be restored into the Reckon Accounts 2014 program.
- (If you haven't done so already), remember to activate the new program by clicking on File > Activate Reckon Accounts
Hope this helps.

I have done all those things. I have tried it in XP and windows 8 on different computers and get the same response that the file cannot be opened as it is in a different version.0

Hey Terry,
Welcome to the Community.
The steps Shaz has provided are 100% correct.
What version of Reckon Accounts 2014 have you installed, is it also Plus? You data-file cannot be downgraded from Plus, it can only be upgraded to a higher version (i.e.: Pro, Premium, Enterprise) or opened in the same a version it currently is (in this this case Plus).
Thanks,
Mirko
