Cannot uninstal Personal 2016

I am attempting to uninstal Personal 2016 and it gives an error message so I can upgrade to 2017.
Having searched for info, I am told the current copy was not initially installed on this PC which is correct. 
I Went through the process of installing when i started this PC and it works fine until I attempt to uninstal. 
I tried to download 2016 again but there is no option...only 2017.
Any suggestions appreciated.

    Download the Windows uninstaller from the Microsoft website

    Thanks for the info. It did uninstal but the actual files were still there. I then deleted the directory containing them and everything worked fine from there.
    Appreciate the hint.
