Importing bank statements?

For years I've been slavishly entering bank statement data manually, line by line, knowing there should be a batter way. Today, looking at the Reckon Community site I'm overwhelmed by the info, and the problems, referenced by those with computer skills about 20 years in front of mine. Can someone offer me a gentle, slow and simplistic introduction in how to import these files and have the transactions entered ?

Totally agree with your sentiments, Alan! It would be really ideal, in my opinion, if someone, like @GerryWinter , for example, who appears to know the process, could document such and have it placed in a Community Library for all community members to access if they wish.

This would then serve the real purpose of the Reckon Community, being to help each other. And, I would add, in the most convenient and efficient way. Also, having such a Library, and promoting such, must reduce the amount of times the same question is being asked from members. And, even if a document prepared for posting to the Library is shown to be not quite correct, then between other keen members, doing what Community does, providing further input, we could arrive at a correct and workable document available to all. (Obviously, the best solution would be inclusion in the official Reckon created and maintained Manual for RPP users).

Quite frankly, the use of this platform to solicit business seems quite inappropriate to me. Nothing personal intended!

If you are able to obtain a bank statement in a QIF (Australian) format, you can import it directly into your RAP accounts. Have you taken a look at our help article about this?

This is just the response l was hoping for! Thankyou! I had a feeling such a document existed, but could not remember where to access it.

Are there other procedural documents like this that exist? Are they kept in the same place? How does a RPP user access them?

John, I get what you're saying and of course that's the whole point of this community but I'd venture a guess to say Gerry has provided assistance, whether that be directly or indirectly on here than you have.

'Contributing', in the context of our discussion here, can be seen as quite a subjective term… again, imo. You say it's time I started contributing. In case you haven't noticed, I started some time ago, and believe I have helped some community members to get more out of RPP. I believe you and Gerry have, too. So, how about we get on with it!

I'm back!

The 'drift' I'm getting from many of the members enquiring about an issue is this…

Firstly, they may have become a little overwhelmed with their particular issue, borne out by their frustrations in trying to solve it themselves, and end up being in the situation of being 'unable to see the wood for the trees'. And, secondly, they simply may not know how to access and use the 'knowledge base' (help site, as @Jason Zhu called it) that Reckon has developed. And, the result in many cases, is a plea for help from a member about their issue that may not have been necessary in the first place!

To explain myself a little more clearly, I hope!….

The two posts from Jason, above, provide links to-

the actual procedure document to import bank statement info, and
the 'help site' web page, where you can find quite a number of procedural statements on a number of RPP topics.

But, 'here's the rub'…. once on this help site page, the challenge presented, is how to find what you need! This brings into play two choices, I believe….

Manually searching through the various links until you hopefully find what you need. Or,
Utilising the 'Search for topics and keywords' search box at the top of the help site page.

Knowing the quite convoluted way that the help site information is structured/stored, I would strongly suggest that members utilise the latter of these two choices. But, they need to be careful in the phrasing of the search criteria they use to perform the search, in order to have the best chance of returning what they seek… ie. be specific, without being too specific, so as to exclude what they seek!

I know I'm preaching to the converted here, Jason, @Eric Murphy and @GerryWinter But, Eric, you did suggest I 'contribute'. So, here is my contribution for the day, treat it as you will!

In summary, if we or someone within the bounds of our 'community', can come up with a way to direct members firstly to the Help Site with a request that they firstly have a good check of the information therein, when they have an issue, we could all save ourselves a lot of time and energy, to say little about the 'wisecracks' some of us have made to each other over the journey.

I'm in Perth for the rest of this week (look out Gerry!😀), but back in my home town of Ballarat, Vic. next week, where I will have more than my phone and an old and slow laptop available to me to keep in touch.

To John, Jason and Eric, thank you all for your ministrations and suggestions. Problem now resolved by that superstar Gerry, who with 20 minutes on the phone guided me through the baby steps in a way that is repeatable and straightforward. That's now the second time Gerry has dug me out of a mental funk of computer illiteracy. So many sites make the problem more complicated to understand because of the complexity of terminology and the use of better trained minds that assume all leaners are equally advanced. Gerry can cover the issues using straightforward steps that can guide the novice. Great stuff Gerry and thanks again.

I've been at Fremantle today to watch the new release movie, "Michael". What an incredible life he and his family have had! I actually got a bit teary at times. Not for Joseph!! That's ok for a 74 year old, isn't it?
