When I input data and press enter to record it, I get an error message that requires complete shutdo

I have Reckon Accounts Premier: Contractor Edition 2014. I have been loading in my data for days with no problems and suddenly an entry failed. Ever since that failure, I enter all the data as per normal and when I press enter to record it the error message comes up "Reckon Accounts has experienced a problem and must be shut down. We apologize for the inconvenience. Code: ........"
Initially I did not note the Codes as I thought a reboot would fix it all as it has in the past. However, the problem appears more permanent.
I reboot and can get one general journal data entry that succeeds into the system and so far every time since, the second journal will fail with a shutdown message once I push enter having put in all the journal details.
The Codes I have noted on these shutdown messages are often the same number but not always. The error Code numbers that I have noted are:-
19016 21975
19016 22136
14184 86090
18843 86168
A couple of other times the program just freezes and shows in the title (Not Responding)
I run Reckon Accounts and Paper Tiger (for filing) on a dedicated laptop computer (Lenovo running Windows 7). I do nothing else on this computer so as to avoid these kind of problems (in theory).
I run Kaspersky PURE 3.0 anti-virus which is up to date - The only thing done prior to this problem emerging was a Scan that reported 6 threats which seemed to be adobe related and I selected all of them for exclusion.
I don't believe this scanning activity is related to the problem though because after this, I used Reckon for at least an hour entering data with no problems at all before the first failure.
Any help to get up and running again would be greatly appreciated. This total shutdown is very stressful when I don't have enough hours in the day as it is (like everyone these days).
Kind regards
Peter

check some vitals.
1) make at least a drag'n'drop photocopy of the live QBW file to a safe place anyway.
2) can you perform a backup to a QBB file, including a verify?
3) start it up and do a CTL + 1 and check the status of a few things like:
- fragments, number of names and disk space size and so forth.
4) You've nicely advised the product: Reckon Accounts Premier: Contractor Edition 2014.
5) and you've advised the operating system: Lenovo running Windows 7).
but is that home or professional, and is it 32bit or 64 bit.
(partially relevant, but nice to know your exact environment)
IN SEPARATE FOLDERS, with different names, try this:
Do yo have early, hopefully recent, QBB backup files?
If so, can you copy and rename one, and carefully restore it with a different company file name in a different folder location (giving it clearly, a 'temporary' sounding name to avoid confusion with real live data files.
BE SURE NOT to overwrite any of the above production files !!
Can you run FILE --> Utilities --> Verify (also try rebuild).
Then: Is the entry of the new transactions still troublesome?
Evaluate the outcome of those tactics, and consider whether a restore and re-entry of recent data is possible.

Thank you for your response Gary,
Please see below for your requested details first, followed by a brief report of the results so far.
1) I think I've made a copy as suggested (I am not sure of correct procedure to do this - and will describe what I did later)
2) Yes - verify and backup works and reports as all successful with this problem file
3) Fragments - 30/ # of Names: Total - 373/ File Size: 42272K Free Memory: 4194303K/ Initial Cache: 32/ Cache: 64/ DB Engine version 9.0.2.3267 - I'm not sure what else might be relevant
4 &5) Windows 7 Professional - 64bit (Intel (R) Core (TM) i5-3230M CPU @ 2.6GHz 2.60GHz 4GBRAM (3.57 GB usable) Service Pack 1
I made a copy and renamed it clearly as a Test copy. I then opened Reckon and restored this file copy. I don't know if I did it correctly though, because it opened and required my password for the original file and seemed to default to using the original file name too.
Once opened I verified (all good) and so I rebuilt (also reported that it was all good). I then verified and saved this rebuilt file with a new file name and closed everything down. I then opened Reckon, and the newly saved rebuilt file - which again required original file p'word and opened still bearing the original file name rather than my new copy or newest saved file name.
Once open, test entries seemed to work no problems (I entered about 6 new entries) so I verified, closed and then reopened - all good. A couple more test entries continued OK so I then verified and saved this OVER the original file and selected to replace it. This all reported that it worked.
I then opened the original file up, it started working OK for a couple of entries and then the problem resurfaced. I think this concept might be successful if I can follow some instructions to do it correctly vs my guesswork approach which showed promise but I think I stuffed the process up due to lack of knowledge.
Are there instructions somewhere that explain how to properly do this procedure? Thanks again for your assistance.
Kind regards

I think you've been doing things very well. Where you might be confused, is with
a) the name of the PHYSICAL FILE (ie: test_of_my_company.QBW)
b) versus the name of the company Entity that then appears on the screen
From your reply, you've only been COPYING the QBW file (not actually going through a BACKUP making process, that puts the content of the live QBW file into a dated QBB backup
file),
The important thing is to have RECKON do a menu choice: FILE --> OPEN ---> to open up the desired TEST file from the folder LOCATION yo stashed that in.
Once opened, do a CTL + 1 and observe that the active file you actually have opened, is in fact the TEST version of the QBW file. If so, then take the precaution of changing the ENTITY name (that will appear on all reports and on the heading of the session) to be say: "TEST_of my company PTY LTD". You can make that simple one-line change under: menu: COMPANY --> Company Information.
Then when you CLOSE that file, and swap back and forth between your ORIGINAL LIVE troublesome file, OR over to the TEST file, it will be more apparent on the top line of the screen window you're working on.
Anyway, the pint is, to double check now, that you do in fact have the ORIGINAL, and a TEST pair of files. It may been that the original file is on a corrupted part of the disk, OR you may in fact have sorted the some INTERNAL database issue of the file, by running through that VERIFY and REBUILD process.
If unclear, call me

Hi Gary,
Regarding the copying vs making a backup - I have done both, but I find it confusing as I get into the process so I'll make better notes as I do it.
I will revisit it all and redo a verified backup test copy and try again. I think that I now follow what you are detailing. I will work on it and let you know how it all goes. With other commitments, I will not get back to this until tomorrow now though.
I'll update you with the results. Thankyou for your suggestions, they're much appreciated.

Hi Gary,
It looks like it has all worked. I've spent half a couple of hours on data entry now without any shutdowns, and the verified backups I have done all went without a hitch also. It appears the rebuild has done the trick.
Thankyou for your guidance in fixing this for me.
With much appreciation
