problem with statement pdf file

I have noticed that pdf file statements for some of our customers are arriving with a ._pdf extension.  This file cannot be opened as a pdf unless renamed to .pdf.  It is not happening to all files however? 
File that does not open
Statement12_from_GARACAMA_PTY._LTD._pdf 
others are being created as
Statement107_from_GARACAMA_PTY._LTD..pdf
Could it be something to do with the '.' at the end of  PTY LTD in the company name,  but then it is not happening consistently?
