Reckon Accounts Personal V31- Windows 11 compatibility

I have been using Reckon and predecessors (Quicken) for over 25 years using PC versions of Windows from Win98 thru to Windows 11 Pro (W98, XP, W7, 8.1 and 10 - 32bit and 64bit variations) .

However, for over one year, I have been frustrated by lock ups and freezes when using V31 on my new Dell Latitude laptop using Windows 11 Pro.

Despite many re-installs and frequent reboots, I have tracked down the problem when using a cobbled up DOS database program like V31 with later versions of Windows.

Clearly, the program is unable to clear residual memory functions when closing. The only way I can get any stability is to set the compatibility in Windows to simulate Windows 7 when running V31!

For other users having similar problems, I suggest using the Compatibility Troubleshooter in Windows 11 and use that facility to test and set the program to use Widows 7 to operate it.

    Hi @Margaret_7639559

Thankyou for providing this very insightful feedback. You have obviously spent quite a lot of time and effort in finding a solution to your issue!

I'm about to upgrade my PC and also move from Windows 10 to 11. And, of course, I'm hoping I don't encounter a similar problem!

@Rav, I, and no doubt other Reckon users, would be very interested in your comments on this issue. And, whether Reckon is working on a fix of V31.

    Cheers all!

For what it's worth, I've been using the v31 version with Windows 11 since it came out without any trouble

    Hi Gerry,

    Many thanks for responding.

After more than 25 years working with this software, getting around the many flaws that crop up, I will continue the challenges that arise with each "update".

As I am managing SMSF accounts, it is important that the share price download facility function remains available - the only reason I have persevered for so long with the brand.

For now, the "regular" uninstall/re-install process together with the compatibility setting noted above, is resulting in reasonable stability.

    Cheers,

    Margaret

    Hi @John_8305976 and all

Just to clarify for everyone following along — the Reckon Personal Range has been fully tested and passed QA on the Windows 11 64bit operating system.

The system requirements for Windows 11 also call for a minimum of 2GB RAM (64-bit), so it’s important to make sure your setup meets or exceeds that baseline for the software to run smoothly. If you're running a relatively up-to-date PC then you should be more than fine in this respect.

If you’re experiencing performance issues, the other potential contributing factor that has been overlooked here is the condition of the file itself. If the file is particularly large, old, contains errors, or hasn’t been maintained for a long period of time, it can potentially contribute to performance issues such as slow response, lockups, or freezes. Running regular file validation and clean-up routines can often help in these cases.

@Margaret_7639559 you mentioned that the software appears unable to clear residual memory when closing. Could you share a bit more detail on how you came to that conclusion? It might help us and others better understand what you’re seeing.
