Reckon Accounts 2014 Suddenly Stopped Working!

Options

Hello,

I have been using Reckon for well over 20 years (it was Quickbooks back then).

Every now and then I bought the upgraded version, and have been using Reckon 2014 for, well probably about 7 years. I bought it and so assumed it would work for as long as I needed it.

Sometime in the past couple of months it just stopped working and told me I needed to activate it!

Firstly I don't understand how this could happen. I wasn't installing it on a new computer - I have been using it on the same laptop for 3+ years. Why did this suddenly happen? Does Reckon have the ability to get into my computer and do this?

Secondly, when I called customer support, they tell me that I need to upgrade to a monthly plan.

I am a pensioner now and there is no way I can afford to pay for even the lowest value monthly plan. I don't need things like importing bank statements and to be honest, don't know what most of the features even are when I look at the plans & pricing.

I just want to keep using the Reckon 2014 that I have always been using.

Is there anyone that can help me?

PS. I am in Australia. Don't know if that makes a difference or not.

I’m afraid you, like many other people, have been let down by Reckon’s decisions to stop these old programs from working, they will tell you that they are no longer tax compliant. Like you many people don’t care about that but nothing else we can do. I’m in Australia too, sorry for your disappointment I can certainly empathise.

    Hi @userreqts

This certainly hasn't been an easy or hasty decision however unfortunately we can no longer continue supporting older versions of software and as such Reckon no longer services old sunsetted versions of the Reckon Accounts Business desktop software.

We appreciate this may pose an inconvenience at the outset and we're looking to make the transition for our customers to a current, supported product as smooth as possible if that's what you decide. To that end, the customer service team have created highly discounted offers for users with older sunsetted versions. I understand you've had a chat with our team in relation to this already, I'm more than happy to organise another call from the team if you'd like or alternatively they're available on 1800 531 840 to discuss your options.

Thanks for taking the time to Reply Kris.

It just seems so wrong :(

Don't know where that leaves me or what to do!

Hi Rav, thanks for taking the time to reply.

Re: "unfortunately we can no longer continue supporting older versions of software"

I don't need you to support it, or to 'service' it! I just want to keep using it the way I have been for years.

=> Why is this not possible?

=> Why did you make my software just stop working when I didn't have any issue with it? It is installed on my computer... how did you make it just suddenly stop working?

I did speak to someone and they just kept telling me that I need to start paying a monthly fee. I am on a pension, sell a few bits and pieces on eBay to try to earn extra $ and everyone keeps trying to nibble away at the few $ I do manage to clear.

I am strongly in support of Kris_Williams, userreqts and I'm sure many others. If a user is not using Payroll, then new versions are not necessary. All we want is the product to activate so we can use it

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

I printed my RA Licence when Installed, it says :

Last Licence Refresh: July 27, 2020

Next required Licence refresh: March 7, 2029

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now when I look at the licence in RA, it says :

Last Licence Refresh: December 12, 2020

Next required Licence refresh: May 2, 2023

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

So Reckon has taken away 6 years of support, so I'm guessing I will have this same issue in 2023. And if I re-install to a new computer at any time, I will only need activation, who knows what will happen ?

I am using RA2019, and refuse to play the subscription game. I see this as a blatant money grab.

Even Microsoft does not force Office users into subscription products. I have purchased MS Office 2021 (outright, no subscription, 10 years support)

    Thanks heaps Steve!

I wasn't even installing it on a new computer! It just suddenly stopped working on the computer it had been working on the day before :( :(

    How can this be legal?

Unfortunately (& to be fair) it’s more governed by legislation compliance requirements making ALL accounting software providers only legally permitted to support compliant products so not wholly down to Reckon 😢

    Hi Shaz,

Again you refer to 'Support'. I don't want, and haven't used, 'support'.

I just want to use the software that I purchased and was using. I don't need or want Support of any kind.

I was using it, then one day it just suddenly when I tried to enter a transaction, up came a window saying that I needed to 'Activate' something that I have already been using for years.

As I said, it’s government legislation that’s behind it. By “support” I didn’t mean only literally (eg over-the-phone help for example). Support also means activation, updates, providing installation keys to allow a user to install a product etc.

Simply put, Reckon (& all other accounting software providers) are no longer legally allowed to facilitate in having their old (& therefore no longer compliant) products actively in use 😢
