How often should I rebuild my data file?

I just recently had a problem with my data file and it was recommended that I rebuild my company file, something I had never done before. This fixed the problem, however I am now wondering if I should have been rebuilding my file regularly to prevent such issues and if so how often should I be performing a rebuild? Is it something that I should be doing often like a backup?

Just to add to what Kevin has said, whenever you do a backup, the first process is to verify the file data.
