Installer requires FLASH which Windows no longer supports and cannot proceed

Hi,

When installing Accounts 2020 enterprise I get an error.

As of December 31, 2020, Microsoft removed flash support from Windows. I cannot even manually install Flash anymore due to these changes.

Is there a way to bypass the flash installer check on install?

    Hi @DavidB

    Can you try this step out in the first instance -

    1.   Control Panel > Programs and Features;

    2.   Turn Windows features on or off;

    3.   Scroll down the list to Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 and tick the box;

    4.   Click OK to save and exit.

    Hopefully that gets around this and you be able to install Reckon Accounts successfully but let me know how you get on.

    Hi,

    When I first installed, I would get .net errors. I already ticked this option which got me further along and removed that initial problem.

    Thats when I started to get the FLASH installer issues. I assume it does a .net check and install first which I am now getting past.

    Now it starts the FLASH installer stage, and it fails.

    I grabbed the temp files folder and could see the flash MSI it's trying to install

    Even manual install fails of this MSI. Microsoft now block FLASH from being installed which is the root problem. This would explain why the reckon installer fails, you will get this on many customers soon as they update Windows. If the installer requires FLASH, it will fail.

    Does the installer have any custom command line switches I can run to bypass it trying to install FLASH?

    Do you know if FLash is required for Reckon accounts to work?

    Adobe do not even allow the download anymore.

    Thanks

    I'll need to have a word with our tech team about this one I think David. Can you let me know what is the exact version of Windows you're currently attempting the install on please?

    Thanks for that David. Let me go back to the team with this and see what options there are to address it. I'll come back to you on this.

    Hi again @DavidB

    A semi update for now. I've been having a chat with our Product Owner about your case and we've asked our QA team to test and attempt to replicate what you're experiencing.

    Their initial testing was to install a clean version of Reckon Accounts 2020 to a fully updated Windows OS, however I'm still waiting on the complete details on which version they had. They reported that the Reckon Accounts installer successfully installed both the Microsoft Runtime Library and Flash 8.0 and then proceeded with full install. Its only the installer that uses Flash from what I understand rather than the actual Reckon Accounts software.

    One thing that the QA team asked me to verify with you is whether or not you may have any security services and/or settings that may be preventing the install? I know that's not exactly specific however it might be worth a check.

    Once I have a bit more info around the their testing I'll come back to you again.

    Was there following KB applied?

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb4577586-update-for-the-removal-of-adobe-flash-player-october-27-2020-931521b9-075a-ce54-b9af-ff3d5da047d5

    KB4577586 removes flash.

    I tested two computers with this applied and no luck. I will try and find a PC that wasn't updated to see if the installer works.

    I managed to install it on an old Windows 10 machine that did not have KB4577586 applied yet.

    Is there a way to install Reckon without it trying to install FLASH first? It's a big security risk to run this in our business.

    Hi David,

    Getting that checked over now. They did state initially it was a fully updated version of Windows but I'll confirm for you.

    Hi again David.

    Ok, a couple of things to go over.

    The QA team confirmed that they were running the latest build of Windows 10 with all updated (including the optional updates) installed.

    Now, I just realised that my own personal laptop is running Windows 10 Professional like you have, apologies for some reason I believed it was Win 10 Home or I would have done this last week.

    Note, I have the below update installed as well.

    I initiated the download for Reckon Accounts 2020 from the reckon.com site and proceeded with installation. I did run into a 'Error 1920. Service QuickBooks Database manager Service failed' response during the install process which I believe you may have as well. I then turned on the .NET Framework 3.5 via Control Panel to allow install to proceed. At this point I was expecting to also encounter the same message you were because up until this point it looked like we were both following the same path however fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, the install then completed without any further interruption and I was able to open the software successfully.

    Hey David,

    Haven't given up on this one but unfortunately the QA team aren't having much luck in replicating the issue you're encountering still.

    They've just run another install right now and ensured that the KB4577586 update was installed along with the other updates etc. The install completed successfully again in their instance.
