General Ledger transactions

I have found that in sales (for eg.) every line item of every invoice is listed. Is this necessary? If all line items are sales, why can't it just put the total in there?
If I want a more details version wouldn't I just go to Sales History?
Why take up all that space in general ledger?

And can I make a journal entry be a recurring one?

Extra to this, it seems no descriptions go into general ledger. In the sales account, it lists cust.names so that where there are 3 line items in an invoice for sales, in general ledger there are 3 entries all with the same cust. name. I can't see why, in general ledger, there are multiple lines taken up for one sales invoice, when the only description is the customer name which is printed for each line.
