upgrade to 2023

I've just read the instructions to upgrade to 2023, am I correct in that we need to do 3 backups? one in 2022 version, then another when we launch 2023, and again another back up in 2023? i don't understand. Wouldnt the back up i've done in 2022, be opened and restored in 2023 when i go into that?

You can never have too many backups! 😄
But depending on how large your file is, maintained etc, I know sometimes it can take some time to complete a backup. To clarify, you will be required to complete a backup during the upgrade process as normal.
I think the info you may be referring to was in regard to updating to STP Phase 2 requirements using the Migration Assistant. Essentially, we've just added that in as a precautionary measure in case you need to fall back to a version of your file prior to the migration being completed for whatever reason.

our file is a fair size, so it will take awhile, so I'm correct to do the back up in the 2022 file, then launch 2023- back up again then as well, before updating the file to the new 2023 package? Does the STP phase 2 come in to play here, or do I go in to that seperately, once ive done the upgrade?

- Back up your file in 2022.
- When you're ready, upgrade to 2023. As part of the file upgrade process, you'll be required to perform a backup.
- You'll then be ready to start the Migration Assistant to update your employee and pay item information to STP Phase 2 requirements. Its at this point where its your choice whether you want to make any additional backups before and/or after the migration.
