To ensure I don't lose my work, I make a file copy and incorporate the date a new but similar file name:

i.e. done by menu:

File

File Operations

Copy

I also use the suggested backup which auto populates a file name that includes the date.

e.g. Shares 2025_20250518.rkn:

i.e. done by menu:

File

Backup

What are the differences, pros and cons of these methods?

Am I safer to do both as I am always concerned re the possibility of a hardware or software calamity and need to restore?

You really only need to do the backup method in the program that you have been using, I would save that to numerous location ie your computer, a USB, google drive, one drive they are all good for backing up.

    Hi @Peter_10865552

You can also consider generating the reports that you need on a regular basis and 'printing' it to a PDF.

Using the 'copy' method creates copies of the multiple individual files that make up the data file set.

Using the backup that creates a ".RKN" simply combines the individual files that make up the data file set.

Consider backing up first to your local computer (such as in a preferred folder on the C: drive) and then copying the resulting backup set to your external devices or online storage providers.

That gives you a copy of the backup set on the local computer and then a secondary copy on an external device or online storage.
