Today's tip is inspired by @Rav first of his name, manager of community and all-round helpful guy.

You may have read his earlier post about How to ask a good question on the Reckon Community 🙋‍♂️ — Reckon Community

Or another classic gem, How do I add an image or screenshot to my discussion? — Reckon Community

Well just in case you want get back to basics, lets quickly recap how to get that elusive screenshot captured and annotated nicely using the free built-in tools that ships with Windows 11 (or 10 if you have not yet upgraded).

The Windows Snipping Tool

Whilst you do not need to have the reflexes of a cobra or the grace of a gazelle, it's easy to get the snipping tool ready to capture the screen.

  • Press Windows logo key Shift for a static image snip
  • Press Windows logo key + Shift + R for a video snip
  • Press Print Screen (for a static image snip)

Note: If you already have another screen capture tool installed, it may have been assigned the "Print Screen" or "PrtSc" key action.

Add the Snipping Tool to your Windows taskbar

This is good alternative, if you are not fan of keyboard shortcuts.

Type snipping tool in the Search field of the Windows taskbar.

The Snipping Tool app will appear at the top where you can

  1. Hover the mouse cursor over and right-mouse click to bring up the context menu
  2. Then select Pin to taskbar

You will then see the Snipping Tool appear in the taskbar for easy access.

There will also be a list of actions you can take.

Start snipping

When launched, the Snipping Tool will let you capture screenshots (or quick video clips) that you can use to give your Community Post question or response that little bit extra, to make it easier to understand and better illustrate your point or concern.

  1. You can review the settings for the Snipping Tool to explore further what options can be customised.
  2. You can choose between a static or video recording snip
  3. You can click the New button to start capturing

There are settings for such things as the default location where clips are stored, whether to add borders to screenshots, etc.

Take note of where screenshots and clips are stored.

You can annotate the screenshot, to highlight key areas, draw some shapes, etc.

The Text actions button also allows you to blur out sensitive information or copy the full text of what is displayed on-screen which can be pasted into your community post as editable text. (Handy for error messages)

Copying the text on screen from a screenshot is also quite useful for other tasks you may have, not just for community posts

Upload Image

Adding an image to your community post, is as easy as pressing CTRL + V (to paste a captured static image)

Or use the add image button at the bottom left corner of the post screen.

Using the '3 dots' icon, you can bring up a quick action to open the screenshots folder.

Upload File (such as a video clip)

You can add a video clip captured by the Snipping Tool which was saved in the default video folder using the Upload File button.

Remember, a picture paints a thousand words… until next #TipTuesday, bye for now.
