MFA SMS lagging

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has any tricks/solutions. My MFA SMS is taking hours to come through. By then, the verification has obviously timed out. How do I fix this so that my SMS code comes through immediately.

Thanks

    Ditch your mobile provider

    Hi @Shearing

Something you could try is switching your phone to flight mode for about 20-30 seconds. This will disconnect your phone from the mobile network. Turn flight mode off and your phone will be forced to poll your network provider and any pending messages etc come through.

Before blaming carrier perhaps one needs to consider the likelihood of the MFA server being down or overloaded. I have a big issue with MFA. It is a chicken and egg many times. We recently had a post from a Payroll app user who is overseas and can't file EOFY reports because unable to access app. Does not have service on MFA phone number whilst overseas. Similarly one can't be dependent on mobile phone all the time. What if phone is stolen or lost? One can load app on another phone but MFA will fail.

A simpler solution might be to provide MFA PIN on both mobile and email simultaneously. Many apps are following this approach.

Agree Swahklu my old phone died. It was three days before I had service again. Myob has backup codes. Intuit has email service. Xero has a secret question. Reckon need to do something

While I'm not an authority on this by any means, MFA and whatever specific requirements are accepted for it are set out for software providers in a mandate by the ATO for Single Touch Payroll. There are specific and fairly stringent requirements around it as its obviously relates to security. I'm only recalling what I heard a while back and it could be wrong or things might have changed since then but from what I understand email being used for MFA is not an accepted method.

The scenario of phones dying, lost, stolen etc is fairly typical and one of the sole objectives of MFA ie. to provide an additional layer of security between your data and those who should or shouldn't be accessing it but yes, in some instances it can prove to be an inconvenience.

Thanks for all the replys. Our phone service is poor here, but the wifi works well, and replaces the mobile service normally. Other agencies that require text message verification have all been successfully received, with Reckon, and one bank, the only companies that lag to that extent. It worked for me today, but in the future I will try the aeroplane trick. I would like to see a second option available to receive the code though, for those times that the text messaged do not come through.

I thoroughly agree Shearing. There SHOULD be an alternative. Most of the country has rubbish internet and rubbish mobile reception. If only we had a decent NBN. Thank you NLP.

Mobile reception and NBN are two different technologies. The former is a service directly provided by private enterprises to hand-held mobile devices and uses the terrestrial medium whilst NBN is a fixed location wired/wireless technology on which private enterprises offer fixed internet services.

Good or poor NBN will not offer MFA if the requirement is to use mobile phone based SMS service for MFA code delivery.

It actually can but depends on the mobile phone. In my case, I have next to zero mobile reception but my phone supports WiFi calling which allows my calls and texts to be delivered over my NBN connection. It's a godsend for those without sufficient coverage but again depends if the phone supports it.

In addition to having a compatible phone one must also have the feature supported by their mobile phone service provider. The main carriers like Telstra, Optus and Vodafone offer this but not all other minor carriers that on-sell plans using the same networks.
