Why do I get the error (-6073, -816) when accessing files on Windows Server?

I have followed and checked all the steps given in the KB article 3626 but still get the above-mentioned error. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi  Anish,

Sounds like there could be more than one host of Reckon Accounts (Quickbooks) on the network.
Please check to see if the non-server computer is hosting, in Reckon Accounts, go to File > Utilities. If you see Stop Hosting Multi-user Access, click it. Then try to open the file.

Hi Deny,

Thanks for your response. We have only three computers on the network with clients installed and all of them are showing "Host multi-user Access." This would mean that the multi-user access is OFF?

Further, we looked at all computers for the services and have disabled below services:
QBCF Monitor Service.
QB Database Manager Service
QuickBooksDB21/22

Still the clients waits for 15-20 seconds and then throws the same error.

Hi Anish,

If all of them showing 'Host multi-user Access', then they are not hosting.

On a network, there should be one host, normally it's the server computer.
You need to find out which computer is the host.
Once you find the host, you can try to stop hosting, then re-host, then try to open the file again.

Hi Deny,

We have a Windows 2008 R2 Server hosting the services and also that client company files on a network share. The setup is like:

1. Windows 2008 R2 Server hosting services and also company files.
2. Three clients connecting to the above server to access the company files.
3. Server is sharing the files as a UNC share (Server\Folder) and "Domain Users" having Read/Write access to the folder.

Hi Anish,

Please try to get one of the user to click Host Multi-user Access, then try to open the data file. If that works, then get the other users to try to open it.

If that is still not working, Please try:
  • Re-install the program with administrator login. Selecting option number 3 which will install Reckon Accounts / Quickbooks and the Database manager.
  • Then run the Database manager first, add the data file folder then scan.
  • Then try to get users to open the file again without hosting.

Hi Deny,

Does this mean I should stop Database Mgr and Quickbooks services on Windows Server and again host the files on a client computer?

Hi Anish,

What I meant was for you to stop the service and re-start it on the Windows Server by getting one of the user to click Host Multi-user Access. And if you are still getting the error, to reinstall the program on the server with option 3.

Hi Deny,

We got one user to select "Host Multi-user access" and after a few prompts, the computer now says that it is sharing the files. However, the problem of parallel sharing still persists. Do we need to re-install all software.

When you say 'the problem of parallel sharing still persists', I assume that you have problem with multi-user opening the file at the same time.

Are you still getting error 6073, 816 when trying to open the file?

You can also try using network mapping, instead of UNC.
Map the data file folder to the three workstation using the same Letter.
Open the data file from the host first, then try from the others.

hi Anish,

I got your email with the attached diagram of your set up.
Sounds like the next step that you can try is to:

  • Uninstall Quickbooks and any other/older Quickbooks from the server.
  • Reinstall on the server with selecting option number 3 which will install Quickbooks and the Database manager.
  • Stop host from the three workstations.
  • Open the data file from the Quickbooks on the server, then switch to multi user.
  • Then try to open it from the workstations.

Hi Anish,

Good to know that you have the system configured for multi-user access (from your email).
You will need multiple user login for the file to be able to use it in multi-user at the same time.
To add users, when you login, go to Company > Set Up Users > Add User. You will also need to be logged in as the admin user of the file.

If you only have one file user login, and you cannot add user, you can get the admin login reset from Data service using below link.
