Missing Shares

When recording a sale of shares and I attempt to allocate lots I get the message "insufficient shares". When I check to see what lots are available the sum of the lots does not match the total of the holdings. In all cases it is less. This problem does not occur frequently and I cannot determine what I am doing wrong. Can anyone help?
